Forty years ago, artist Alex Carver (Morgan Freeman) bought a run-down apartment in a sketchy part of Brooklyn with his wife, schoolteacher Ruth (Diane Keaton). Today, their neighborhood is now very hip and their apartment worth a small fortune. The now- retired Ruth and Alex haven't changed - they are still as much in love as ever. But they have let Ruth's niece Lily (Cynthia Nixon), a real estate agent, list their property to see what the market might bear. On the eve of their open house, the Brooklyn Bridge is rumored to be under a terrorist attack, sending the media into a frenzy and people's attitudes about living in New York. Closer to home, Dorothy, the Carver's beloved dog, is suddenly having trouble walking. While Dorothy is having expensive treatment at the vet, Ruth convinces Alex to go apartment hunting in Manhattan, where they miraculously come across an ideal place they might actually be able to afford. As the world around them seems to mirror their own chaos and confusion, Ruth and Alex realize the same bond of love that has kept them together all these years will allow them to see their way through this crazy weekend as well.(C) Focus

Name : Graham Fuller / Alias : New York Daily News
Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman are pleasantly entertaining in "5 Flights Up." But the movie's far too pleasant for far too long.

Name : John Anderson / Alias : Newsday
A couple of pros, playing attractive characters in an amiable yet topical story.

Name : Christy Lemire / Alias : RogerEbert.com
What begins as a sweetly sentimental story ends up being cloyingly melodramatic.

Name : Tirdad Derakhshani / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
5 Flights Up is a sweet film with a few nicely turned lines, some good jokes, and some very lovely dialogue. But it's not much more than fluff and air.

Name : Gary Goldstein / Alias : Los Angeles Times
What a pleasure to see a simple, finely tuned dramedy about real adults with real emotions in a real-life situation.

Name : Mike D'Angelo / Alias : AV Club
If 5 Flights Up is worth seeing, it's primarily for the pleasure of Keaton and Freeman's company, plus maybe for some tips on buying and selling an apartment.

Name : Peter Keough / Alias : Boston Globe
The duo provide a bit of wit and warmth amid the contrived subplots and the self-satisfied moralism.

Name : Richard Roeper / Alias : Chicago Sun-Times
Sometimes you see a play and you can imagine it being a movie. Sometimes you see a small movie like this, and you can imagine it working better as an intimate stage play.

Name : Lou Lumenick / Alias : New York Post
Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton have unexpectedly great chemistry in this warm and funny comedy about a couple who contemplate leaving a walk-up apartment in Brooklyn they've occupied for their entire 40-year marriage.

Name : Stephanie Merry / Alias : Washington Post
"5 Flights Up" is far from perfect, but it's also undeniably touching.

Name : Gerry O / Alias : Kid First
From the story line, it may seem that this film will be boring to kids. But, when I started watching this film I fell in love with it. Morgan Freeman's perfect timing of jokes and Diane Keeton's wonderful and priceless emotions make this film entertaining and heartfelt from the very start to the last second. It is a bit hard to say what the main genre is. Of course, there is a lot of romance between the two characters, Alex (Morgan Freeman) and Ruth (Diane Keeton), there is also that funny side that makes it all that more enjoyable. And, there is still a serious dramatic side which keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end. The story starts when an elderly couple, Ruth and Alex, live in a high up, massive apartment in New York City, Brooklyn actually. However, the five flight of stairs they need to take is getting more and more challenging so they decide to move to a location with an elevator. To add to the challenges, their dog is in the hospital undergoing treatment for spinal injury. The director, Richard Loncraine makes this movie feel authentic and rustic and also shows how current society stereotypes elderly people, how they truly feel about it and how wrong it is. The cast is wonderful and the acting is just superior with serious and comedy scenes mixed together and standing out all the time. I also like how they lightly touch upon problems of the past as well as problems of today. For example, Ruth and Alex got married in a time when bi- racial couples were not welcomed with open arms. Then it shows how today a gay couple is making an offer on a house. They submit it along with a note telling how they tried to adopt a child and finally were able to adopt one. It is something Ruth and Alex wanted to do when they were younger but were denied. My favorite scene is when they have an open house to sell their apartment and a huge crowd of people comes through, looking at everything and touching everything. Alex doesn't like it but Ruth tries to see the positive side but fails. I like that scene because it shows how the couple's life isn't perfect and also makes the film feel very real. Not only this moment does that but many others as well. This film has perhaps several moments of adult content but none that is too mature. I recommend it to kids ages 10 to18 and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Name : Isabella Biedenharn / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
Based on Jill Ciment's wry novel Heroic Measures, the film is at its best when it sticks with the everyday .

Name : Pete Vonder Haar / Alias : Village Voice
What starts as a somewhat charming - if prosaic - story of love in the time of gentrification inexplicably spends most of its third act mired in the finer points of apartment hunting, like a tastefully lit HGTV show.

Name : Rex Reed / Alias : New York Observer
It's good to see first-rate artists devoted to a film that doesn't pander to an unsophisticated audience with a thirst for violence and smut.

Name : Stephen Holden / Alias : New York Times
The lead performances are so perfectly in sync that Alex and Ruth really feel like an old married couple who know each other's foibles and cherish every tic.

Name : John Hartl / Alias : Seattle Times
The movie ends just as you expected it to end, and there are almost no surprises along the way.

Academy Award nominees Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter, and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, lead the cast of a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain. The stirring story centers on Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.'s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life. When increasingly aggressive police action forces Maud and her dedicated fellow suffragettes underground, they engage in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the authorities, who are shocked as the women's civil disobedience escalates and sparks debate across the nation. Inspired by true events, SUFFRAGETTE is a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women's right to vote - their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives. The film also stars Ben Whishaw, Anne-Marie Duff, Brendan Gleeson, Romola Garai, and Natalie Press. SUFFRAGETTE is directed by BAFTA Award winner Sarah Gavron from an original screenplay by Emmy Award winner Abi Morgan. (C) Focus Features

Name : Jocelyn Noveck / Alias : Associated Press
In Suffragette, which without [Mulligan] would be a far, far less compelling movie, she doesn't merely entertain us with her skill. She brings to vibrant life an important part of our global history that's easy to forget.

Name : Sarah Bryan Miller / Alias : St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Morgan's writing is occasionally pedestrian, but the sweep of the story, the performances and Gavron's vision make up for it.

Name : Liz Braun / Alias : Toronto Sun
Suffragette is easy to look at, populated by strong actors who move through a world furnished with lovely period detail, but it feels hollow at the centre.

Name : Ben Sachs / Alias : Chicago Reader
This period drama shows how awful it was to be a working-class woman at that time. [but] scenes dramatizing the political organizing and protests are less effective, bogged down by pedantic dialogue and historical generalizations.

Name : Stephen Farber / Alias : Hollywood Reporter
A rousing, relevant slice of feminist history.

Name : Richard Brody / Alias : New Yorker
The script, by Abi Morgan, filters out the contextual complexities of politics, and Sarah Gavron's direction reduces difficult situations to simple sentiments.

Name : Sara Stewart / Alias : New York Post
Despite Mulligan bringing her A-game, the film falls short of its potential.

Name : Peter Travers / Alias : Rolling Stone
In a sea of Hollywood escapism, Suffragette - flaws and all - is a movie that matters.

Name : Inkoo Kang / Alias : TheWrap
"Suffragette" derives its considerable intellectual and emotional might from recognizing the symbolic nature of the vote. . That practical view makes the [film] not just an urgent history lesson but also a perceptive human drama.

Name : Connie Ogle / Alias : Miami Herald
Suffragette occasionally turns hard truths into platitudes. But the story is inspiring, buoyed by a fine cast, a pointed, important examination of the price paid for a shot at equality.

Name : Andrew O'Hehir / Alias : Salon.com
Gavron splits the difference between didactic history lesson and "relatable" storytelling without quite reaching either goal.

Name : James Berardinelli / Alias : ReelViews
From a historical perspective, Suffragette is riddled with inaccuracies, but that's less of a problem than its questionable dramatic arc.

Name : Bilge Ebiri / Alias : New York Magazine/Vulture
It's a movie with a lot of things to say, but walking out, you feel like you're still waiting for it to say them.

Name : John Anderson / Alias : TIME Magazine
Yes, such things happened. Gavron's touch, though, renders them melodramatic.

Name : Steven Rea / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
If we now take a woman's right to vote and to hold public office for granted, Suffragette reminds us that it wasn't that long ago when things were different.

Name : Julia Cooper / Alias : Globe and Mail
Mulligan's performance, coupled with a solid script by Abi Morgan, shows us just how much is at stake when a woman decides to wage war.

Name : Peter Rainer / Alias : Christian Science Monitor
[Mulligan is] a fiercely intelligent performer, and that suits her here. She gives some human weight to Maud's big moments, especially when they veer dangerously close to hokum.

Name : Rex Reed / Alias : New York Observer
As a period piece, Suffragette captures and preserves the pulse and passion of a past era, yet strengthens the vibrant urgency of a cause that continues to inform the future.

Name : Mick LaSalle / Alias : San Francisco Chronicle
It's a movie that's easier to respect than love, but it is something to respect.

Name : Rafer Guzman / Alias : Newsday
An intriguing premise dampened by thin characters and a formulaic story.

Name : Kristin Tillotson / Alias : Minneapolis Star Tribune
Mulligan, in particular, delivers, bringing believability to a role that's quite a stretch, given the transformation her character has to go through from workaday mum to first-wave feminist superhero.

Name : Ann Hornaday / Alias : Washington Post
"Suffragette" is an absorbing, ultimately moving portrait of thwarted ideals that rings all too true today.

Name : Stephen Whitty / Alias : Newark Star-Ledger
In minimizing the usual scenes that fill this sort of film - terribly awkward breakfasts at the country house, men wagging their chinwhiskers at each other - Gavron finds room for others.

Name : Joe Morgenstern / Alias : Wall Street Journal
The movie does well to shine a light on the venerable struggle, but its beam is narrow, and often pallid.

Name : Sasha Stone / Alias : TheWrap
The supporting cast, including Helena Bonham Carter, Romola Garai and Anne-Marie Duff, are all top notch, and a reminder of how few films like this exist anywhere.

Name : Karen D'Souza / Alias : San Jose Mercury News
"Suffragette" urges us to look at the dynamics of gender, class and power then and now with fresh eyes.

Name : Alan Scherstuhl / Alias : Village Voice
Suffragette expends its energy selling us on what we already believe rather than examining the way these activists pressed the world into believing it.

Name : Jesse Hassenger / Alias : AV Club
It depicts an important movement that remains relevant today as a historical obligation of a movie, dutiful and often surprisingly dull.

Name : Moira MacDonald / Alias : Seattle Times
It's always compelling; you feel grateful, watching, that this story is being told at all.

Name : A.O. Scott / Alias : New York Times
Stirring and cleareyed - the best kind of history lesson.

Name : Barbara VanDenburgh / Alias : Arizona Republic
Suffragette, like Maud, is modest in scope and ambition, and is more emotionally affecting for it.

Name : Kenneth Turan / Alias : Los Angeles Times
Though ably acted and indisputably on the side of the angels, "Suffragette" as directed by Sarah Gavron is more dead-on earnest and schematic than it needs to be.

Name : Justin Chang / Alias : Variety
A picture whose politics prove rather more commendable than its artistry.

Name : Chris Nashawaty / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
It's a shame that, despite some excellent performances, this urgent, well-intentioned film feels so conventional and stolid.

Name : Peter Howell / Alias : Toronto Star
Suffragette has the power to shock even those familiar with the early days of the feminist movement it dramatizes.

Name : Cath Clarke / Alias : Time Out
It's a tremendous, awards-worthy performance from Carey Mulligan.

Name : Ty Burr / Alias : Boston Globe
It riles you up and at times may move you to tears of rage.
